NextGEN Facebook (NGFB) version 8.9 and WordPress Social Sharing Optimization (WPSSO) version 3.9 have been released. These latest versions include a new “Theme Integration” tab on the Advanced settings page to help provide better Schema markup support for Developers and/or power-users. By default, Schema itemprop / itemtype markup is added to the
<html> element in webpages, but a better location for this markup would be in the
<head> element. Unfortunately, WordPress does not have a standard filter for the
<head> element (like it does for the
<html> element attributes). If your theme provides a filter for the
<head> element attributes, and/or you feel confident enough to edit your theme’s header.php template, you will find the settings under the “Theme Integration” tab very useful.
NextGEN Facebook (NGFB) version 8.8 and WordPress Social Sharing Optimization (WPSSO) version 3.8 have been released. The latest NGFB and WPSSO versions include new dismissible warnings for rejected images (too small and/or extreme aspect ratios) when using WordPress v4.2+. When previously dismissed warnings are found, an additional notice will be shown to allow these warnings to be displayed again temporarily.
NextGEN Facebook (NGFB) version 8.6, WordPress Social Sharing Optimization (WPSSO) version 3.6, and WPSSO Social Sharing Buttons (WPSSO SSB) version 1.6 have been released. This latest NGFB and WPSSO version include a new “Video Preview Image(s)” option in the Social Settings metabox to enable / disable the use of video preview images for each post / page / etc. NGFB and WPSSO SSB also add a new thumbnail column in the Social Settings metabox under the Sharing Buttons tab. The thumbnail shows the image that each button will share.
NextGEN Facebook (NGFB) version 8.5 and WPSSO version 3.5 have been released. Both plugins include a new “Social Description” column for post / page, user, category and tag editing lists (including WooCommerce products, categories, and tags), which complements the “Social Image” column added in a previous version.
The “Ignore Thumbnails in Content” option on the Advanced settings page as been renamed to “Check Image Dimensions” in order to reflect its current effect on image selection.

NextGEN Facebook (NGFB) version 8.0 and WordPress Social Sharing Optimization (WPSSO) version 3.0 have been released — These are major version releases and include many new features and improvements. If you use the Free version, you’ll notice several (36) new options on the General settings page. These options were previously only available to Pro users, but my hope is to provide more functionality to Free version users, while still maintaining an attractive feature set for Pro version users (3rd-party plugin integration, Twitter Cards, custom Social Settings, and Advanced plugin settings).
What’s the difference between NGFB and WPSSO?
WPSSO is a fork (aka child) of NextGEN Facebook (NGFB). They have the same author, many of the same excellent features, but WPSSO is distributed without the sharing buttons and their related features. As a result, WPSSO is 25% smaller and is often preferred for websites that already have (or don’t need) a set of sharing buttons.
The previous versions of NGFB and WPSSO offered a Basic Options View on settings pages by default — with a button as the only way to switch to an alternate All Options View. The current versions now include an additional link under the settings metaboxes to “unhide / show all” the options when using the Basic Options View. This should make the Basic Options View more usable for advanced users that also prefer a cleaner / simpler settings page.
The WPSSO and NGFB plugins for WordPress are licensed based on the WordPress Site Address. Typically, a Development, Staging, and Production website – for example – would require 3 licenses. In the spirit of helping our fellow developers, we are offering a free license for every license purchased – on all past and future purchases. So, for example, if you purchased a license for example.com (or www.example.com), you can also register dev.example.com using the same Authentication ID. This allows developers to purchase a license, develop a customer’s website, and then change the Site Address upon delivery, without having to purchase an additional license for the production website.
